Hi Everyone, the season has now started.
Just a quick catchup to cover what’s been going on and coming up with hopefully warmer dry weather.
So, lift In again successfully completed and great to see all the boats out again on their respective moorings “Thanks team”
Compound now cleared allowed for relevelling and a new stone surface to assist with drainage and ready now to receive dinghies and small boat storage. Don’t forget if you have left anything in the compound chocks supports and cradles please remove them asap.
Big boats are off on their first shakedown cruise this weekend to overnight at Levington on the Friday then onto Ipswich for Saturday returning Sunday. Don’t forget those with new boats , they need a nice new shiny clean club Burgee which can be purchased from David Lodge or at the bar £12.99 before May 1st then £13 after. Bit of luck they may see the Orwell Dolphin.
Micro racing also kicks off this weekend with the Spring Regatta usually a colourful sight for the spectators with spinnakers flying.
Remember if you haven’t paid your membership for 2024 -25 this was due 1st April so your late. You don’t want to be chased by the Membership Secretary or the Treasurer.
Last weekend SSC were guests of Harwich Town Sailing Club where we were treated to good hospitality and lunch. 28 Members made their way across mainly by train and enjoyed a lovely afternoon viewing the Harwich Haven views and surroundings. They will be racing to Manningtree in their annual passage race in July where we will call on volunteers to assist us to reciprocate the welcome and hospitality that they did for us.
Wednesday evening saw a visit from the RNLI who demonstrated to us the importance of servicing and inspection of wearing our Personal Flotation Devices while afloat. It was disappointing with the numbers of attendance on such a important issue of life safety devices which can only assume that everybody is already aware of the requirements and know how to wear them correctly. Only 7 people turned up Where these volunteers and professionals took the time to offer their services free of charge for our benefit.
Coffee and Cake mornings are remain being well supported and enjoyed by all, and it won’t be long before we will be again to hold them outside in the sunshine once the Marquee becomes erected later in the month.
One of our summer events in June will be an Afternoon Tea at Wivenhoe House Hotel I sent out notification previously and a list will go up on the board, but we already have high interest in this at a bargain price of £27.50 per head payment in advance so don’t lose out and get your names down soon at this beautiful venue for a fun afternoon.
Don’t forget if you need any last-minute bits the Boat Jumble is up at Horsley Cross from 9.00am this Sunday 28th April, and if you want to sell anything contact our web master with your advert in a Jpeg format and we can post this in our for-sale section on the web site.
As per a previous notification the club lost another long serving member/sailor Robin Wilshaw. There is a tribute to Robin on the boards. His Cremation will be in May but will only be attended by very close family only. However, there will be a Celebration of Life memorial service on 14th June at 11.30am in his Shed for those that were aquatinted with him. Further details will be posted on the boards with who to respond to should you wish to attend.
Bowsprit and Tide tables are in the parlour awaiting your collection for next time you frequent the bar and for any new members that expressed to get involved and said they wished to assist with bar duties please book in your training with Richard Martin for how to pour the perfect pint?
Talking Bar, Richard will be there tonight from 6pm with no soggy crisps this week, just maybe slightly moist cheese-lets. We also need some volunteer staff for the weekend if there is anyone available. The bar app is available on one drive but currently only goes up to 12th May.
That’s enough from me for now
Take care and have a great weekend
Commodore Colin
